He was born in 1908 in the village of Kryukovo in the Vereya region. He moved to Moscow in 1924.
Nikolai received his primary education at the courses of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia under the leadership of Ilya Ivanovich Mashkov, where he worked from 1928 to 1931.
In 1936 he graduated from the graphic faculty of the Moscow Polygraphic Institute and in the same year was transferred to the third year of the painting faculty of the Surikov Art Academy, where he studied at the workshops of Boris Vladimirovich Ioganson and Alexander Alexandrovich Osmerkin.
In 1942 he graduated from the Art Academie named after V. Surikov on the workshop of A.A. Osmerkin, with the diploma subject "From native places". Nikolai Sergeyevich was among the artists of the first edition of the Surikov school. His thesis work was highly appreciated by the artist Petr Konchalovsky. "Painter by the grace of God!" as he said about the talent of Sergeev.
In 1942, Nikolai Sergeyevich was admitted to the Union of Artists of the USSR.
In the years 1944-1945 Sergeyev was direction by the studio of artists named after MB Grekov to work in the Sevastopol, liberated from the Nazis. The result of the trip was a series of sketches and finished works dedicated to the heroic deed and tragedy of the city-hero.
In 1987 he was elected an honorary member of the association of artists "Moskvorechye." Personal exhibitions of the artist took place in 1990 in Moscow, Germany (1992)
Exhibitions "Three generations of artists Sergeevs" in Moscow were held in 1998, 2002, 2004.
His paintings were acquired by the museums of Russia, the states of the former Soviet Union, as well as the Russian Art Museum (Minneapolis, USA), Lazare Gallery (Verginia, USA), Evromet Bank and several other Russian and international banks. Many of the artist's works are in private collections in our country, Italy, Spain, Israel, Germany, Great Britain, France, Poland, Hungary, Denmark, Yugoslavia, Malta, the USA. The works of Nikolai Sergeevich Sergeyev were exhibited at Christie`s, Bonhams and others auctions.
